VITAL SOCIETY'S WOOD PROJECT The Wood Project started in the early 90's by a fellow named Neil McDonald. Neil was a commercial wood cutter at the time and he began this project with 2 participants. His philosophical approach to life is focused on ability and on valued participation on the community. The number of participants increased over the years and will continue to grow. Participants go out to the forest and cut firewood which they sell by the cord. They also do forestry clean up on private properties when requested. Participants earn wages and feel happy when they are going out to work. When the snow or hot weather comes and the forests are closed; the participants cut wood on the property or help with other chores as required. This group of individuals is committed to giving back to their community. Annually they raise funds for one of the schools to take their annual trip to Bamfield. They raise funds for 3 school lunch programs, which helps in feeding over 200 children every month. They assist sports teams, special interest groups, families and persons in need and the Cowichan Food Connection. The success of this program is based on sound philosophy, and the connections made with school principals, forestry companies and community partners. Vital Society is proud of the work that Neil and his crew do each and every day.
